CHAPTER 13

I GUESS MONTY realized I needed my space on the drive to the Highland Racquet Club where the homecoming dance was being held because he let the radio make up for conversation.

I was grateful until the new John Legend song came on. I tried my best to block it out, remembering how just that morning I had imagined dancing with Megan to that song tonight. Now I was sure she would be dancing with that new joker.

The reality hit me like a bucket of cold water that Megan would probably be there. If she showed up at the game, there was no way she would miss the homecoming dance. It was her first one at Grover, and she had been looking forward to it for weeks.

“Man, take me home,” I said to Monty just as we were pulling up at the Highland Racquet Club.

“What are you talking about? We just got here,” he said.

“I’m not trying to see Megan,” I said.

“She probably won’t even come,” Monty said, but he didn’t sound so sure. “Noah, you’re going to have to face her at some point.”

My expression must have indicated tonight wasn’t the night I wanted to deal with her because he sighed. “How about we go in and check things out? If she’s inside, I’ll make an excuse for us. If not, we’ll stay and hang out.”

I thought about it and finally agreed.

Although I had been to the dance the last two years, I really didn’t remember anything about it. This time I paid more attention, mainly because I was checking every area to make sure Megan wasn’t there. I squinted, trying to make out shadows and figures in the dark room, momentarily smiling when I realized the room was up high, so it looked like we were in a clubhouse, which I knew Nat would like.

I finally decided Megan wasn’t in the room and I headed outside to the patio. Even though it was November, it was a really nice night. The sky was clear and the stars twinkled. I glanced around, frowning when my gaze landed on a girl who looked vaguely familiar, even though I could only see her profile.

She must have felt me watching her because she turned to look at me and smiled. I smiled back, still trying to remember where I had seen her. She said something to whoever she was talking to then headed in my direction.

“Hey, Noah,” she said. “I see you finally made it.”

I just nodded as my mind raced trying to place her.

She touched my arm, and I sucked in a breath, feeling like I had been burned. “I told you I’d be here for homecoming,” she said.

That’s when it hit me where I knew her. It was the girl whose tire I had changed on the first day of school—the cheerleader from Tate Academy. I tried to remember her name: Kaya, Karen. Neither of those sounded right.

“So how have you been?” she asked. Before I could respond, she said, “I know you’ve been doing well.
